25/9/2020

Wandsworth Art, an initiative by Wandsworth Council in London, UK, is having an Online Exhibition from Saturday 3rd October to Sunday 11th October 2020.
Please go to www.wandsworthart.com/profiles/rose-long/
to see my work.
My art studio is situated in the Borough of Wandsworth and I am very happy to be able to take part in this Show.
As Wandsworth Artists' Open House can't go ahead this October due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, Wandsworth Art has created this new online platform to connect art lovers to the local artist’s latest work.
Between 3 – 11 October 2020 Wandsworth Art will invite local partners who will curate presentations of their favourite artists to watch and also offer local young creatives advice on careers and routes into the creative industries.
Wandsworth Art are excited to be in partnership with the Royal College of Art (RCA) who will be leading a special Wandsworth Art ‘takeover’ day in October 2020, where the public can explore their own creativity.

Rose Long is an artist and architect. She practiced as an architect since the early 1980's for over 35 years. She has increasingly concentrated on painting and design.
She paints in oils and acrylic.
She was brought up in South Africa and has lived in London in the UK since the mid 1980's.

Rose paints in collaboration with two partners – Water and Gravity.

The elements of chance and complex variability, that these introduce, allow her work to become an interplay of intention and the often unexpected result of the laws of physics.

Using this technique, she explores the character and emotion behind the façade of her subjects, be they human or otherwise.

These subjects sit in an energetic atmosphere comprising of light and shadow in space. Her chosen palette is often limited, using the varied tones in one hue. Combinations of complementary colours to achieve greys are added and then washed away. The Golden Mean and the Fibonacci integer sequence, ratios that are very pleasing to the eye, are frequently used in the composition, canvas size and placement of subject matter. Patterns emerge in the work and marks are made with varying intensity, revealing an aspect of the mood and a version of the underlying reality of the situation.

The progression in her work is evolutionary, not radical. Each piece informs the next in technique and expression. The pieces are becoming more allegorical.

Using the medium of paint feels as compulsive and empowering for Rose now as learning to read was for her as a child.
