Artist's Statement |
Artist, designer and creative director, Rose Long’s career has seen her progress from working for over 37 years as an architect to painting original artwork and designing products such as furniture, clothing and luxury homeware goods.
She ran her own architectural practice from the mid 1990’s. She has blurred the boundaries between design disciplines variously tackling product and furniture alongside designing new and refurbished developments.
As a contemporary artist, based in London, with a deep appreciation for both tradition and innovation, her work explores the emotional depth of abstract expressionism in her Stripes Series characterised by bold paint-layered oil paint brushstrokes; and figurative pieces in acrylics with intricate detail that reflect cultural narratives in her Architectural Series.
She paints in oils and acrylic, utilising the elements of chance and complex variability found in Water and Gravity. These allow her paintings to develop into an interplay of intention and the often unexpected result of the laws of physics.
The Golden Mean and the Fibonacci integer sequence, ratios that are very pleasing to the eye, are frequently used in the composition, canvas size and placement of subject matter. Patterns emerge in the work and marks are made with varying intensity, revealing a version of the underlying reality of the situation.
The elements of chance and complex variability, that these introduce, allow her work to become an interplay of intention and the often unexpected result of the laws of physics. Using these techniques, she explores the character and emotion behind the façade of her subjects, be they human or otherwise.
In her figurative work these subjects sit in an energetic atmosphere comprising of light and shadow in space. Her chosen palette is often limited, using the varied tones in one hue. Combinations of complementary colours to achieve greys are added and then washed away.
The progression in her work is evolutionary, not radical. Each piece informs the next in technique and expression. The pieces are becoming more allegorical.
Rose has recently launched an online boutique selling elegant lifestyle objects and clothing embellished with her original artwork.
